GGN is aiming for a record number of participants!

PRESS RELEASE – September 9, 2022

The world’s biggest MC competition, the Gotland Grand National, is set to break its record for the number of participants!

While most other major competitions and events in Sweden are seeing a decline in participants, the Gotland Grand National is on track to set a record for the number of registered participants ahead of the competition weekend on October 27–29, 2022.

– As of today, September 9, 2022, we have a total of 2,981 registered participants, compared to 2,764 at the same time for the 2021 competition—an increase of 217. We set the record at GGN in 2018 with 3,117 entries, and if the forecast holds, we should be able to reach a total of 3,250–3,300 participants—a number GGN has never had in its previous 38 years, says Conny Bohlin, CEO of Nordic Sport & Event.

– We have seen over the course of the year that other major competitions and events have lost 20–35% of their participants across all disciplines, such as running, cycling, and other major endurance competitions.

“Once we’ve analyzed how and why GGN is increasing, we can conclude that we successfully held our competition in 2020 and 2021 during the challenging pandemic period without any interruptions,” says Conny Bohlin. “Of course, higher prices for electricity, food, and gasoline, along with other factors, are causing participants to skip certain events.” In addition, there are plenty of options now that everything has started up again at the same time, concludes Conny Bohlin, who is extremely pleased that GGN participants are choosing to travel to Gotland for GGN to the extent that they are now doing so. Regarding the goal of having 300 girls and women participate in GGN by 2023, we currently have 178 registered participants, compared to 126 at this time last year. Fifty-two more, and we hope to reach around 200 this year who will begin this year’s GGN.
